Names in Hebrew aren’t the descriptor of a person that can be phonetically, linguistically or culturally repurposed. They are the Identity, the Function, the Purpose….they are The Person. The functionality of the name is in the literal audible syllables of it. The actual sound. They cannot be translated, transliterated or be remotely synonymous to any other phonetical, linguistical, cultural substitutions, and remain in covenantal fidelity. Names are meant to be repeated with your mouth, not written down and changed to appease your demographic, culture, or your skin color…. To whom it may concern.

Mattityahu (Mat-teet-yah-hoo) to Matthaios to Matthew.
Honest Fidelity where transliteration occurs without covenantal consequence,
Yehoshua to Iēsous (ee-ay-soos) to Jesus.
To distort that name is to distort the covenant. To rename the Redeemer is to reframe the redemption. This is not merely linguistic drift; it is strategic sabotage.
Trifecta of Yehoshua’s Identity:
I. Law of First Mention — Yehoshua Named by Moses
– Textual Anchor: Numbers 13:16
“But Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Yehoshua.”
– Pivot: This is the first recorded use of the name Yehoshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ) in Scripture.
– Dimensional Consequence: Establishes Yehoshua as a covenantal deliverer, successor to Moses, and prototype of the Messiah. The name shift from Hoshea (“salvation”) to Yehoshua (“YHWH is salvation”) marks the legal and prophetic upgrade.
II. Septuagint Transliteration — Yehoshua Rendered as Iēsous
– Textual Anchor: Numbers 13:16 (LXX)

Iēsous is to Yehoshua what “$” is to “dollar.”
It was never meant to replace the sound—only to represent it.
The Greek Iēsous (Ἰησοῦς) was a linguistic symbol for the audible name Yehoshua, not a new pronunciation.
Hellenistic Jews, the deciples and people of Yehoshua’s time understood this instinctively. It was obvious to them: the symbol pointed back to the original name, not away from it.
